New DWI Pavilion with Generation Riesling alongside
“Germany Sparkles” – Such is the slogan of the German Wine Institute (DWI) at this year´s ProWein Trade Fair in Düsseldorf. At the completely redesigned exhibitor´s pavilion in Hall 13 (13C 100), 20 examples of German sparkling wines (Sekt) will be available for open tasting. They are the prizewinning entries – from a total of 200 submitted samples – chosen by an eleven-strong panel of judges of renowned Sekt experts from ten countries. The top three will be revealed at the DWI Stand on Sunday, 17.03.2019, at 11:00h and presented with an award certificate “Germany´s Best Sparkling Wines (Sekt)”.
There are many reasons for this year´s ProWein topic, believes DWI managing director Monika Reule: “On the one hand we have noticed an increased interest in sparkling wines in very many foreign markets. At the same time, German Sekt production has experienced a significant boost in quality in the last few years. Moreover, with a sales volume of approx. 275 million litres and an annual pro-capita consumption of 3.3 litres, Germany is the world´s largest sparkling wine market. At the ProWein, we want to convince the trade of the international competitiveness of our sparkling wines, which are still too often underestimated. A special focus will be placed on our Winzersekt (“Winegrower´s Sekt” made from estate-grown grapes by the traditional method). At 9 million litres, they have a 3 per cent share of the total German Sekt consumption”, explained Reule.
Because German Sekt also makes such an excellent partner for mixed drinks, TV celebrity barkeeper Nic Shanker will present new Sekt cocktails at the DWI Stand on Sunday at 13:00h and 14:15h.
Another key focus of the German Wine Institute runs under the theme “The Lightness of Being: Kabinett, Spätlese & Co”, with guided tastings by sommelière and wine author Christina Fischer in the ProWein Forum in Hall 13 on Sunday and Monday at 12:00h.
Also taking place at the DWI Stand on Monday at 11:00h is the award ceremony for the winners of the competition “Excellent Wine Gastronomy”, which the DWI organises jointly with Original SELTERS each year.
On Monday and Tuesday at 12:30h, the DWI – together with the German Bread Institute – will provide a culinary treat when bread sommelier Jan-Christian von der Heide and a German wine princess demonstrate the harmony between diverse bread creations and domestic wines.
On Monday at 14:00h, the DWI will present its new advanced training programme “German Wine Professional”, which comprises 13 modules and will be conducted in cooperation with all German wine regions. Five course participants will be on-site and will each present a special wine discovery they have made.
Every year at ProWein, the DWI provides international wine merchants, retailers and sommeliers with information on the latest trends and news from the German wine regions. The Sunday “Orange Hour” at the DWI Pavilion has meanwhile become a popular meeting point for trade visitors from the Netherlands with up to one hundred participants.
Discover the Future with the Generation Riesling
Entering its sixth year at ProWein, Generation Riesling will now be located directly alongside the DWI Pavilion in Hall 13 (13D 101). Ten young producers will be there to introduce trade visitors to exciting wines from five wine regions. Also at the DWI Stand, there will be daily guided tastings presenting different wines and winegrowers under the heading “Discover the Future”.
Following their successful premiere last year, the young generation of winegrowers will again invite fair attendees to some tasty snacks on Monday evening from 17:00h, where one can round off the day in a relaxed atmosphere.
